The Unfinished Tale of Halloween Horror at the Kavian Cliffs
Alien World’s Treasure Hunt–Quest #8
Darkness in the rain at the foot of remote cliffs on Kavian.
Only the lights from a headtorch and an Artunian shovel can be seen beneath the red moon. A lone Explorer hacks away at solid rock. He hears the noise of earth being scraped and stops, looks over his shoulder. Nothing. Just the pitch black beyond the torchlight.
He lifts the shovel and stabs again at the glistening rock. Another scraping noise, louder, closer. He peers into the darkness. Rain drops glisten as they fall through the light beams.
He swings the shovel out through the darkness but it hits nothing. He rubs his eyes, takes a swig from a hip flask and looks down at his watch. The readout illuminates a weather countdown: ‘Storm front arriving in 7 minutes’.
He pulls out his leather wallet — a WAX logo is embossed on the front. He counts all the cash in it: just a 5 and 2 single Trilium notes.
Lightning flashes on the horizon followed by ominous thunder. He looks down at his hands — they are bleeding.
He picks up the shovel and drives it into a crack in the wall. It sticks. He wrenches it back and forth, trying to lever out a piece of the rock. the blade snaps. He stares at the broken handle, crest-fallen.
He pulls out his leather wallet — a WAX logo is embossed on the front. He counts all the cash in it: just a 5 and 2 single Trilium notes. He looks up at the red moon and screams with frustration. A distant scream answers back. He freezes. Was it an echo? It didn’t sound… human.
The rain falls harder. More lightening and closer thunder.
With his bloody hands he grips the trapped blade of the shovel, still wedged in the cliff face. He tugs and rocks it back and forth. Finally it breaks free and he falls to the ground. A shallow hole now peers back from the rock face.
He whips open his utility bag and rummages through his tools, smearing them in his blood. He takes out a small bundle of basic explosives, stuffs them into the rock face, switches on the digital display and starts typing in the detonation protocol. The display on the explosives dims and dies. He goes to tap it, then thinks better of it.
Back at his bag he pulls out a spindle of fuse and connects one end to the bundle in the rock. He retreats with the spindle trailing fuse back to the explosive and hunches behind a boulder. He pulls a box of matches from his bag.
More lightening and louder thunder. The rain falls even heavier. He scrabbles to quickly light a match. He drops it. He tries another — drops that one. He manages to light the 3rd until the rain puts it out. He lights the fourth but his blood has soaked the stick and it dies. He screams with frustration and beats his bloody fists on the boulder. He pauses, calms himself with a deep breath and carefully lights a fifth match: it burns. Finally he lights the fuse.
As the fuse crackles and hisses loudly he sets a 10 second timer on his watch and covers his head with his hands. The loud crackle of the fuse suddenly stops. The timer alarm beeps. No explosion. He peeks out around the rock, then, crawling on hands and knees, he follows the burnt fuse with his fingers. He comes to where the burnt fuse becomes fresh, untouched. His torchlight lowers to reveal…….???
