What Are Alien Worlds Syndicates?

The Alien Worlds Syndicates represent the evolution of the gaming guild, giving players the unique opportunity to make their own rules and guide their gameplay. Supported by Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) architecture, players can govern their communities, create and participate in team games, and allocate digital assets within large treasuries, making them co-owners of the systems they engage with.

Each of the six planets in Alien Worlds is a Syndicate. Players can support one or more planets by staking Trilium (TLM), the in-game fungible token and the game’s scarce resource, to vote for leaders who decide what games and activities to offer to the community, what events to run, and how to distribute the assets in each planet’s sizable treasury. Players strategize, collaborate, and compete against one another and, within the DAO ecosystem, control and create their own experience without a predetermined set of gameplay rules.

Below are the key details and steps you need to know to become a citizen, convert TLM to Planetary Tokens, Stake to vote for Candidates and to Vote in elections. For more in-depth information about Alien Worlds Syndicates, check out Alien Worlds Wiki.

Becoming a Citizen

Syndicate Planetary details

All Explorers can browse through Planetary details, such as Candidate and Custodian lists and profiles, but only when an Explorer converts at least 1 Trilium to a Planetary Token of a respective Planet and sign the Member Terms will that Explorer become a Citizen of that Planet.

Member Terms Agreement

Explorers are not limited to participating in one Planetary Syndicate. They can become citizens of any Planetary Syndicate for which they have the respective Planetary Token. The process for becoming a Planetary Syndicate Citizen are:

  1. Sign the Member Terms
  2. Convert at least 1TLM to a respective Planetary Syndicate’s Planetary Token

Once an Explorer becomes a Citizen of a Planetary Syndicate, the symbol above will be shown next to the Explorer’s player status.

Converting TLM to Planetary Tokens

Converting Trilium to a respective Planetary Token is necessary to:

  • Become a member, or “Citizen,” of a Planetary Syndicate
  • To vote in weekly elections for Candidates
  • To register and run as a Candidate in Elections
Converting TLM to a Syndicate’s respective Planetary Token

On the selected Planet, Convert between TLM and the native Planetary Token. Select the quantity of TLM tokens to Convert to the respective Planetary token. To Convert back from the Planetary token to Trilium, use the same interface. There is no delay when converting back to TLM if the Planetary tokens have not been Staked.

Staking to Vote for Candidates

Dashboard view of Candidates Rankings

Staking allows Explorers to vote for Candidates in the Planetary Syndicate Elections. The longer players Stake their Planetary Tokens, the more voting power they will have for their favored Candidate in the weekly elections. Additionally, the more Planetary tokens they have staked, the greater their vote power. This is called “Stake Weighted Voting” with a time component added.

The process for Staking to vote is as follows:

  1. Convert Trilium to Planetary Syndicate Tokens. See Convert TLM to Planetary Tokens
  2. Stake tokens for a duration of time to increase voting power
  3. Vote in weekly elections to avoid vote decay

Staking to Run and Registering for Candidacy

To become a Candidate for Planetary Council, a Citizen must Convert and Stake 5000 Trilium to Planetary Tokens before registering for candidacy.

Once this has occurred, a “Become Candidate” button will appear in both the Planet Details Module and the Governance Menu.

As part of a Citizen’s registration for candidacy, they will provide:

  • A Candidate Name: any name a Candidate wishes to use during the elections process and which will be available for all Explorers to view. A Candidate’s chosen name must not violate the Member Terms and has a limit of 50 characters.
  • A Profile URL: an external URL to an image that will be pulled into a player’s profile. This will not replace the player’s default avatar.
  • Candidate message: a rich text format with a 500-character limit. Candidates can leave a message that faces publicly in the Candidate profile view, with the first paragraph automatically being larger than the rest of the message. As with the Candidate’s name, the Candidate’s message must comply with the Member Terms.

Once the registration information has been added, the process will be formalized by clicking the button to “Stake Candidacy,” as shown below.

The Stake Candidacy Screen

Note: once registered, a Candidate’s staked Planetary Tokens cannot be used for other purposes until a Candidate removes their candidacy [ie, their tokens are staked].

Candidate management section of Governance dashboard

Once a Candidate, the player’s badge will update, representing their current standing, and a “Manage Candidacy” option will be available in place of the previous “Become a Candidate” button.

Candidates will be ranked according to the number of votes they receive and will be reflected in their member badge via various borders associated with different standings.

First place standing
2nd-4th place standing
5th-10th place standing
11th place and above

Voting

Syndicate Citizens vote to elect the Custodians of the Planetary Council who manage the Planetary Syndicate’s resources. Voting signals the culture and preferences of the community to the Custodians, and can be used to remove Custodians deemed to be acting against the interests of the Syndicate.

As a Syndicate Citizen, up to two votes for candidates can be cast per election — each candidate will receive full Vote Power. Votes can be changed at any time.
