Alien Worlds’ Primary Game Mechanics on Low Carbon Blockchain
The energy consumption of blockchain technology has become an increasingly divisive topic lately. In a recent New York Times article, it was shared that “the process of creating Bitcoin to spend or trade consumes around 91 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, more than is used by Finland, a nation of about 5.5 million.” It is true that some blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum currently use large amounts of energy to process transactions. It may also be useful to know that not all blockchains are made the same, and not all of them consume energy at such high levels. In fact, some chains are or are close to being carbon neutral, a vast difference from the energy consumption of Finland in a year!
One of the major differences between chains that consume large amounts of energy and those that consume low amounts is the way transactions are approved and equations are solved. There are two primary methods of transaction validation design, and a chain will often process transactions in one of the two ways. One is what is called a “proof of work” (PoW) system, and the other is called a “delegated proof of stake” (DPoS) system. Older blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum currently operate using the former, and chains such as Worldwide Asset Exchange (WAX) operate using DPoS.
The majority of the game mechanics for Alien Worlds, including the Mining game, are on the WAX blockchain. WAX operates using a DPoS system rather than a proof of work PoW system, such as Ethereum and Bitcoin. A proof of work system uses significantly more energy because a high number of miners are competing to solve equations in return for tokens–miners are doing the work in a PoW system. With a delegated proof of stake system such as WAX, WAX token holders can stake their WAX and vote for a block producer that executes authorized transactions, eliminating the high computing power used when an excess of miners compete. Alien Worlds on WAX is more than 65,000 times more energy-efficient than were it on Bitcoin.
Choosing WAX to host its large quantity of NFTs and a majority of its game mechanics was an intentional choice for Alien Worlds. Given the large number of transactions executed daily from the Mining game, over ten million currently, it was important to be conscientious of how energy usage and consumption would be affected. As Alien Worlds further develops, it will remain a priority to construct its mechanics with energy efficiency in mind.
